Making things work
I like finishing work that someone can use. It might be a software feature or a repair at home. I want the result to work well.
Beyond the résumé
I’m Julian Matherson. I build software and raise five children with my wife. I enjoy learning how things work and trying things myself.
My story
I’m a senior software engineer. I enjoy understanding a difficult problem and building software that solves it. I care about the people who have to use what I build.
I want to understand why something works. I ask questions and try things myself. That applies to debugging software as much as fixing something at home.
I’m married and raising five children. My family matters most to me. I try to be present for them and make good use of the time I have.
How I work
I like finishing work that someone can use. It might be a software feature or a repair at home. I want the result to work well.
When something goes wrong, I start by finding out what happened. I keep working until the problem is resolved and the fix is checked.
I ask questions when I don’t understand something. I prefer a clear explanation and an honest conversation about what we can do.
I’m comfortable taking responsibility for a project. I also ask for feedback and document what another engineer will need to know.
What matters to me
Away from the keyboard
I enjoy fishing and spending time outside. It gives me a reason to put the screen down.
I like repairing things and learning how they work. Finishing a useful project is satisfying.
I enjoy software outside work too. I’m interested in automation and projects that connect software to physical devices.
I read about physics and artificial intelligence. There is always something I don’t understand yet.
The professional side
My résumé and portfolio show my work in production Rails applications.
